Mets win first of four in the desert

August 23, 2005 · Filed Under Mets · Comment

The New York Mets headed to Arizona and took game one of four from the D-Backs. Glavine pitched great, then was taken out in the ninth inning. Glavine pitched where he pitches best, in the desert. Reyes hit his second homer in three games, and the Mets were back to normal. They are still in last place in the NL East, suprsingly, with a 64-60 record, while the Padres are in first place in the NL West with a 61-63 record, two games below .500!! Anyway, the Mets won 4-1, also having Victor Diaz hit a solo shot.

Mets take two of three from both Pittsburgh and Washington

August 23, 2005 · Filed Under Mets · Comment

The Mets took two of three from each team, and the two losses that came….were not good. The Pirates threw a no-hitter until the 5th, and Washington knocked Benson out of the lineup without even a half of an inning to play. The best part about the gamr lost to Washington was the rookie, Jacobs, hit a pinch-hit home run in his first at-bat in the major leagues.

Mets come from behind and sink the Pirates

The Mets did a good job at the plate against the Pirates, and an OK job in the field, but not too great. There was a few times when Benson and Piazza lost communication, and ended up being a base hit on a short little hit. The two were thinking that it was really a foul ball, and the umpire said it was not. Also, a play similar to what broke up the no-hitter for Pedro Martinez in LA, but easier, Gerald Williams looked sloppy in the field, dropping the ball when he had it in his glove and his hand. Also, on a successful double play, Cairo and Reyes kind of lost communication when Reyes JUST touched second base, if at all, to get the out at second and threw it to first for the double play…/ At the plate, the Mets looked amazin’. The Mets sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the second against Redman. After guys were walked, Kris Benson hit a two-run singleto left field. After that, Cairo hit it off the wall, JUST missing a home run…AFTER THAT, Jose Reyes hit a sac fly to score a run. Also, in that mix, Gerald Williams had a run-scoring hit…PHEW, that was a lot to say. Anyway, later in the game, Cliff Floyd sent one into right field over the fence for a two- run shot off of reliever John Grabow. In the dugout hung Mike Cameron’s #44 jersey in support for him, who is over in Sand Diego still in the hospital, recovering from surgery. The Mets are not sure whether he will be back this season, but they are hopeful.

Pedro carries no hitter into the 8th

Gerald Williams saves himself instead of taking one for the team against the wall; Randolph puts Kaz Matsui in with two outs in the top of the ninth…for some reason; Beltran back, but may need surgery, still. Pedro threw a no-no into the 8th inningDodger Stadium was going nuts after the big triple that broke up Pedro’s no-hitter that would have made Mets history. Soon after, the Dodgers smacked a homerun to be winning, 2-1. When the Mets were up soon after in the top of the ninth, they had runners on, and a grounder hit to the right sent Marlon Anderson home, but was tagged out. With two outs, manager Willie Randolph decides to put in Kaz Matsui to try and get something going… nothing did, as he struck out…nothing new to him.
