Manning to Burress….TOUCHDOWN!

October 11, 2005 · Filed Under Giants · 1 Comment

Eli and Plaxico are getting into a big rythym and it is the start of probably a long quarterback-wide receiver tandem. Plaxico Burress was benched for the first quarter of the San Diego game two weeks ago for not coming to two team meetings before the game.

One week later, in the first quarter of the Giants 44-24 win vs. the Rams, Burress got 107 receiving yards and started to catch balls everywhere.

“Last week was last week,” Burress said Sunday. “I treat every day like a new day. I’m pretty sure everybody else does. I just try to make progress every day. If I’ve got to look at myself in the mirror after practice and ask myself, ‘Did I get better,’ then I didn’t. I’ve just got the drive and the will to just keep getting better and better each day and just try to improve every week.”

Burress finished the game with a career high 10 catches for 204 yards and 2 touchdowns. The yardage tied for the third-highest total in Giants history.

“I didn’t even know I was over 100 until Tiki [Barber] came and told me in the huddle,” Burress said. “I really didn’t want to hear it because I wanted to just keep plugging away. You don’t think about those things during the game. You just keep going out trying to put out all the plays you can give. I thought this week they were going to try to roll my way a little bit in the second half; they didn’t so we just kept throwing it, kept plugging away, and kept scoring touchdowns.”

Giants quarterback Eli Manning threw 17 of his 35 pass attempts to Burress, a sure sign that the two are on the same page and finding their rhythm.

Plaxico said:

“When Eli and I have a little extra time during practice, we actually work on routes full speed,” Burress explained. “I tell him, ‘If I get this look, this is what I’m going to do.’ We just go out pre-game and pretty much run the whole route and try to get on the same page. It’s just been paying off for us each week and we just keep making progress and I think that’s good for us.”

Eli said:

“I think with all the receivers, the more you play with them, the more you get in a game-like situation with them - their body movements, what they are going to do in certain situations - you’ll get more comfortable,” Manning said. “I feel like I am getting that with Plaxico. The more we practice, the more we continue to play in games, we’ll continue to get better.”

With Plaxico Burress at 6′5, it gives him a great height advantage over DB’s. He was very happy to be getting the big amount of passes thrown to him. It is much different than when he was in Pittsburgh, when Hines Ward had the spotlight.

I’m happy, we’re 3-1,” he stated. “We did to the Rams what everybody thought they were going to do to us. We’re the highest scoring team in the league and we just got to keep plugging away. We’re going into the bye week 3-1 and that’s what we all wanted. We really wanted to be 4-0 but like I said, you just keep working hard as a team.”

This week, the 3-1 Giants take on the 3-2 Cowboys coming off of their bye week. The NFC East is so tight with one game the biggest difference, that the Giants, and any other team in the NFC East has a good shot to make the playoffs, and even win the division

Manny to Mets?

Manny Ramirez is looking for a new agent, and hes been talking to Boras, the agent who set up the Gary Sheffield trade to the Braves. Manny requested to be traded midseason and the deal was all set up for him to be sent to the Mets, and the trade hit a bump as the Devil Rays pulled out. The original 3-way deal, according to reports, would have brought Manny Ramirez and Tampa Bay closer Danys Baez to the Mets, moving Braden Looper, Mike Cameron and Tampa Bay’s Aubrey Huff to the Red Sox.
The Devil Rays would then receive top Red Sox pitching prospect Anibal Sanchez, Milledge and top pitching prospect Yusmeiro Petit from the Mets.

The Red Sox and the Mets were most likely going to begin talks again this offseason.

Piazza’s all done with Mets

1998-2005

Mike Piazza has played his last game with the Mets, playing great with the Mets since 1998. He has hit more home runs than any catcher in the history of major league baseball.
The future hall of famer received a curtain call and stood outside the dugout while the fans cheered him on for 15 minutes.

The crowd was larger than probably any team in their last game not heading for the playoffs, cheering for him for the last time as a Met.

There are many career highlights for Piazza, but to me, the best thing that Piazza can do is hit a home run against the Yankees or the Braves, two teams that I hate.

Mike Piazza will most likely go to the American League to be a Designated Hitter, not having to worry about playing catcher, since he is 37 years old.

“They love him here. They love guys who dominate in this city,” Floyd said. “So they really appreciate his greatness. You always knew that. But this was something more. This is a tough place to play. And he’s played great for them. They’re on his side now till the day he dies.”
