Pedro pitches 3 scoreless innings in debut
Pedro Martinez allowed 1 hit and 1 walk in 3 innings. He said that if his toe feels like it does today for the rest of the season, it’ll be great because he didnt feel much pain today.
His custom spikes and the gel pads worked. His toe “hurt a lot less than it did the second half [last year],” he said. “I’ll pitch like this all year. If I feel like this all year, forget about it.
I’ll pitch.”
Everyone was impressed and at the same time it was a sigh of relief, because I was worrying that he wouldn’t be that ready for the beginning of the season.
Since he’s behind schedule, he’s going to pitch on the Mets third game of the season, while Tom Glavine will pitch opening day.
today the Mets beat the Orioles 8-0
–ONE WEEK UNTIL OPENING DAY!–
Pedro out, Glavine in for Opening Day
Pedro Martinez’s toe is being a pain, so he’ll start a few days after, probably April 5th or 8th.
The rest of the Mets should be healthy except for Delgado, who’s arm hurts, and Wagner who is hurting but he’ll be back. Same with Matsui, but he is horrible anyway, and Anderson Hernandez will be better at second base.
Pedro faces live batters
Finally Pedro faces live batters… FINALLY
Today Pedro Martinez pitched to some minor league batters in front of teammates, coaches, executives, a trainer and a dozen reporters. Today was the first time that he
pitched to live batters this year. He received comments from many different people, and it was a good day for the Mets. Today was one step closer to Pedro’s first start, whether opening day or after, still undecided. If Pedro is not ready to go when it comes opening day, it will be Tom Glavine who will start.
The Mets are aiming for a big playoff run, and they will most likely make the playoffs–IF the team is healthy.
SNY starts up tomorrow at 5 PM Eastern time.
SNY opens Wednesday
Sports Net NY will very first come on Wednesday, March 16th. For people around me, the Channel is 19, and QVC will be moved to Ch 6.
From then on, all Mets games except the ones on ESPN, WB11, or FOX will be on SNY.
CAN’T WAIT
Mets beat by Beltran, PR Club
The Mets gave up a 2 run 2 out hit to Carlos Beltran to break a 1-1 tie in the 5th inning. Team Puerto Rico, with Ivan Rodriguez, Javy Lopez, Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, Bernie Williams, and other big players, beat the Mets in a game in preparation for the World Baseball Classic. The fans for Puerto Rico were going crazy, and had flags flying through
the stadium.
“I didn’t know St. Lucie had so many Puerto Ricans,” Beltran said afterwards. “It was fun, and great to see all that support from the fans. They bring a great excitement to the park.”
Beltran’s game-winner came against left-hander Billy Wagner, the new Mets closer who excused himself only a few days ago from Team USA, saying that he was not physically ready for the classic.”I’m a player of the Mets,” Beltran said. “Facing Billy … he’s such a hard thrower. I was looking for a slider, but he kept giving me a lot of fastballs. Good thing I was able to get one over third base on a pitch I got jammed.”
Team Puerto Rico did not allow any walks the whole game.
If you were wondering where Carlos Delgado was, it was because he has tendinitis in his left (non-throwing) elbow.
Elsewhere, the Mets played a Split Squad, where the other half of the team was playing the Dodgers, and lost.
The Mets play the Indians tomorrow on ESPN at 1:00.
