Mets 2-Hit Cards, Sweep series

April 5, 2007

In the opening three-game series of 2007 for the Mets, they scored 20 runs. The Cardinals? 2. The Mets high-powered offense picked up where it left off in the 2006 season. That included 10 runs in the final game of the series, with Cardinal-killer Carlos Beltran blasting two homers over the wall at Busch Stadium, with Reyes tattooing one over the right field fence. Later in the game, with Julio Franco at the plate, the Mets bursted open the flood gates, as he crushed the ball and picked up his share of RBI’s. Paul Lo Duca, who is off to a great start, had three hits. The Mets had 12 on the final day of the series.

John Maine started for the Mets in game three, giving up only one hit, which was in the fifth inning. The Mets finished the game only allowing two hits.

In Game one, the Mets relied on 41-year old starter Tom Glavine, who picked up his 291st win of his career. In game two, also 41-years old, Orlando Hernandez threw a great seven inning performance, as the Mets won, 4-1.

The Cardinals banner and ring night were on Sunday and Tuesday (monday was day off).

The Mets now head to Atlanta to play division rival Atlanta Braves in their home opener, and will send Oliver Perez, who was great in the 2006 postseason, to the mound.

Lastings Milledge will most likely start in place of Shawn Green, since there is a lefty pitching.

The players had the following to say about the series win over the Cardinals:

“A great series for us,” David Wright said, staying with the first-person plural theme. “What part of our team didn’t get going? We played great defense the first night. … Our pitching was pretty good every game, and we hit tonight.”

“What we need to do,” Wagner said Sunday night, “is to win the series, just like any other series.”
