Mets Win Rubber Game vs. Bonds, Giants
Another series win! Final: Mets 4, SF 2
The Mets won the rubber game a day after being shut out by the San Francisco Giants for the first time this season.
Orlando Hernandez struggled early, giving up two runs in the first but then was nearly perfect from then on, giving up only TWO hits in the game. In a slightly tight spot late in the game, Joe Smith ended the inning with a strikeout… he is the BEST. The Mets ended the game with three hits allowed.
Billy Wagner has been great this season. He has 13 saves this season, all consecutive, and has 31 combined 06/07 saves.
Carlos Beltran collided with the first baseman in the early innings and left the game, most likely for precautionary reasons. He was subbed in by the struggling rookie Carlos Gomez.
Also, Reyes seems like a criminal with all these stolen bases, picking up another tonight, his 29th of the season.
By the way, I hope Bonds breaks this record and all, and I’m on his side about the steroids deal but MAN, is he a jerk. It seems he tries his best to be the most unfriendly and most hated player in baseball with his attitude. Here is why:
Okay, I notice his displeasure with talking to the media, as they only seem to focus on ‘roids and the record, but if he schedules to talk to reporters, he better move his butt out and talk to the reporters, because they have a job to do and they can’t be rejected by a snotty player like him.
Bonds also shows a serious lack of hustle. He never moves anymore. If he pops up to second or something, he’ll run–or should I say jog maybe halfway, IF THAT, to first base, which is pathetic. I hope that a ball drops in and he should be on second while he’s halfway to first.
Come on Barry, if you hate your life that much, just QUIT. WOW.
Anyway, enough about that.
Mets upcoming Schedule:
Friday, June 1: Mets vs. D-Backs at Shea. 7:10 PM
John Maine (6-2) vs. Brandon Webb (4-3).
Saturday, June 2: Mets vs. D-Backs at Shea. 1:10 PM
Jorge Sosa (4-1) vs. Livan Hernandez (5-2)
Sunday, June 3: Mets vs. D-Backs at Shea. 1:10 PM
Doug Davis (3-6) vs. Oliver Perez (6-3)
Just Leave Bonds Alone
I will not cheer for Barry Bonds tonight because I am a Mets fan, and Bonds plays for the SF Giants, but I will say this: I’ll boo Barry Bonds the day that someone PROVES that he has done steroids. Until then, I will hope he breaks Aaron’s record. Besides, it will be nice to see someone become the new Home Run King in my era. Just because of suspicion doesn’t mean newspapers, fans, and other baseball people should say “I hope Bonds doesn’t break Aaron’s record because he used steroids.”
If the Mets fans are aiming to boo Bonds tonight, well then I sure better hear plenty of booing going around tomorrow when Guillermo Mota comes off his 60-day suspension for using steroids. At least he was proven to use steroids.
Oh, and Bud Selig needs to deal with the reporters and go to the game Bonds breaks the record at. Why would a commish miss that?
Shaun Powell of Newsday in New York wrote that Selig has no choice but to be there even though he and Aaron are close friends and even though Aaron has made it clear he won’t be around to pass the torch to Bonds.
“Bonds has never been proved guilty of anything, even with our strong suspicions,” Powell wrote.
For all of you out there who just thought “that is not true,” well here you go: Barry Bonds said that trainer Greg Anderson gave him a cream in 2003 that nobody thought was steroids, but it turned out it was. The reason that Bonds was using this cream was for his arthritis
Mets, Delgado win first two from Fish
The Mets won the first two game of the series against the Marlins, but in my mind, more importantly is Carlos Delgado appears to be out of a very long slump. He has a hit in four
straight games, while hitting two home runs last night and just missing another the night before. This power from Delgado is what the Mets need from a veteran player like him.
Everyone seems to be injured right now… EVERYONE. While Jose Valentin is still about a week away from returning to 2B, and Pedro Martinez around two months from returning, the Mets have some other worries, also. Outfielder Shawn Green broke a small bone in his foot after fouling a pitch off of it. Carlos Gomez strained a hamstring, but he’ll be sent back to NY for evaluation and return in a few days. Moises Alou is expected back next week, and finally, Paul Lo Duca left four innings after being pegged on his left elbow.
By the way, a bit off topic, but suspended Mets reliever Guillermo Mota comes back on Wednesday and Omar said he’ll put him in the bullpen immediately.
wow, did I get all the injuries? Well, it doesn’t seem to matter, as the Mets keep on rolling, with a record of 31-17, the best record in the NL, along with the second best record in the Major Leagues.
Today the Mets finish the series in South Florida against the Marlins, and head back to shea for a three game series with the San Francisco Giants.
Mets lose series to Braves, 2-1
In the lone game the Mets won from the Braves in their series together in Atlanta was because of Oliver Perez’s great start yet again. Metsblog was talking about how many say that him and Roberto Hernandez were a “throw-in” with the trade following Duaner Sanchez’s injury last year with the Pirates. He definitely proved the Pirates wrong.
Carlos Delgado has been moved to the number 6 spot in the order temporarily until he gets his average, which is at it’s lowest in several years, up. Until he does so, he’ll be batting sixth. Willie says that there may be a little bit more pressure batting fourth, so he’ll try and get him away from the pressure this way. Delgado thinks otherwise. He says there is no pressure.
Delgado has been struggling with the outside pitch and he has struck out often. He says that his reason for only having three homers by now is not because of his offseason arm surgery. It definitley could be a factor, since if he tells the press that it IS a problem, opposing pitchers will take advantage of it.
I think that if Delgado doesn’t come out of this slump by late June, early July, there’s going to be some talk around the Mets about putting Shawn Green at first and Gomez in right…Delgado needs to get it together, and fast if he wants to have the success he had last season.
Not that this matters, but similar topic, slumping. Jose Reyes tonight broke an 0-14 dip, but he also popped up to end the game. He hasn’t hit a HR since April 21.
Next:
Mets continue their road trip with a three-game set in Florida, in which LF Moises Alou will most likely return, along with Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, who will start Friday in the first of the three game series.
With Alou and Duque on their way back, the Mets should be able to start winning more games again and hopefully pad their lead in the National League East, which right now stands at 1.5 games ahead of Atlanta.
Bit of Overreaction as Smoltz wins 200th: Alright, wow, he won 200 games. Now can we all sit back down and continue the season? Jeez, did anyone catch Turner Field’s reaction to Smoltz winning his 200th game? They acted as if he just recorded a perfect game. The players, one by one, gave him a hug, the fans cheered him as he tipped his cap and waved to them. WOW, big overreaction in Atlanta…. and some may disagree with me because they still should cheer because of his 150 saves, but tonight wasn’t about a save, it was about a win for the Braves and being able to win the series against the Mets.
Game 1 of Subway Series: Mets/Yanks
Yankees @ Mets starting at 7:10 PM
The struggling Yankees head ‘crosstown to Shea Stadium to play the New York Mets in the first of two Subway Series this season.
Game one of three begins tonight at Shea Stadium. Rain is expected for all three games of
the series, but they’ll try to get as many as they can in, and if needed, probably play a doubleheader sometime in the series.
Pitching Matchup:
Andy Pettitte (2-2, 2.68 ERA) vs. Oliver Perez (4-3, 3.00 ERA). In Pettitte’s last start in Seattle, he gave up two runs in 7 1/3, but it wasn’t enough, as the Yankees couldn’t score runs for him and lost 2-1.
In Perez’ last start, he became two outs away from a shutout of the Milwaukee Brewers at Shea Stadium. His walks look like they are behind him, as he hasn’t had much trouble at all with location recently.
Lineup: It’s too early for it to be posted, and I’m guessing Endy Chavez will get the start in Left Field and Shawn Green in right. Most likely Damion Easley will get a start at Second with Valentin out for awhile.
