Last Night’s Game: Phillies Torture Mets
Last night, a team finally caught up with Brian Lawrence (L, 1-2, 6.31).
Lawrence, a midseason pickup for the Mets, has just been trying to keep games close enough to keep the offense within range. When Pedro Martinez comes back, he’ll likely fill
Lawrence’s spot in the rotation. Martinez is expected back within a week or two.
The Mets (73-57) have lost two straight, while the Phillies, still in a deep hole, have won two straight. The Mets lost the final game of a three game series against the Dodgers.
David Wright and Jose Reyes both went 0-for-4, while Reyes was robbed by Chase Utley on a line shot to open up the game.
Paul Lo Duca, well-rested coming off the Disabled List, smacked two hits for the Mets, who had nobody else on the team that could even get more than two hits. Moises Alou, Luis Castillo, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, and Shawn Green all had one hit. All of those, except for a Beltran double, were only singles.
David Wright, who was unhappy with Home Plate Umpire C.B. Bucknor’s wide zone in the early innings, finally let it blow in the ninth and was ejected.
I won’t say this just because I’m a Mets fan, but because I was bat boy and I witnessed how this guy’s attitude is. The Home Plate Umpire, C.B. Bucknor, ejected David Wright in the 9th inning of last night’s game. Bucknor seems like a nice guy on TV, but in real life, not so much. Bucknor was getting mad at me because, listen to this, because I DID NOT HAND HIM THE BASEBALLS RIGHT. Come on, gimme a break. Nobody is perfect. Especially not him! That strike zone last night, anyone would say, was horribly wide.
Also, the first base umpire made a horrible call against the Phillies. Castillo “threw Rollins out” at first on a ground ball he dove for, but according to video, Rollins was safe by a mile. Charlie Manuel came out to argue and was ejected quickly. I dont blame him for arguing.
Was that one of the worst umpire crews out there last night or was it just me?
Final thing: Ship Out Schoeneweis, who gave up 5 hits, 3 runs, including 1 HR last night. Grrreat work. Not.
Final Score: Phillies 9, Mets 2
Tonight’s game: Mets (73-57) vs. Phillies (68-62)
