Pedro Great in Rehab Start
Pedro Martinez made what is most likely his second to last rehab start yesterday for Single-A Port St. Lucie. It was a great start. He keeps getting better with every start he makes. Here are the results:
6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K
Everyone expects Pedro to make another rehab start, this time in the same place, since according to Pedro and the Mets, it doesn’t matter who he pitches against, but what matters more is that he works on his command.
“It doesn’t make any difference for me to throw in Double-A or Triple-A over what I’m doing now,” Martinez said. “It’s more about me getting command of my pitches than who I’m facing. Anyway, whatever happens in these games, you won’t find the numbers on the back of any baseball cards.”
Pedro Martinez should be back in the Mets rotation within about a week or two.
Around the Giants World: Updates and Injury Status
First of all, nothing new:
John Branch, of The New York Times, reports the NY Giants are expecting an answer sometime this week from DL Michael Strahan egarding his status for this season.
But at the same time, you never know with this guy:
Updating ongoing reports, ESPNews reports Giants DE Michael Strahan may end his holdout in the next few days. He may decide to play beyond just the 2007 season as well.
Droughns Update:
Mike Garafolo, of The Star-Ledger, reports NY Giants RB Reuben Droughns was working out at fullback during practice Monday, Aug. 27. “We’re going to work Reuben, who’s done that before in Denver, (at fullback) and of course, (Michael) Matthews,” head coach Tom Coughlin said. “I’d like to see Reuben (against the Patriots Thursday) at fullback.”
And now, I’ll spit out the ugly list of injuries. These are only key injury status reports:
- Michael Eisen from Giants.com reports Giants Kicker Jeff Feagles (back) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 27. It is uncertain what his availability will be for the team’s preseason game this Thursday.
- Eisen also reports Jeremy Shockey (hamstring) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 27. It is also uncertain what his availability will be for the team’s preseason game this Thursday.
- Mike Garafolo, of The Star-Ledger, reports Giants WR David Tyree (wrist) will undergo surgery on his wrist Monday, Aug. 27, and is expected to miss four to six weeks.
Ok, too many injuries for me. I’m hoping that these injuries stop coming at such a crazy rate. The Giants need these players. There is always something new with Burress. Now it is his back, while at the same time, he missed last week’s game because of the “flu.” I’m beginning to wonder if they said that just to keep a different injury separate. We’ll find out.
The Giants already have lost several key players, including FB Jim Finn, just to name one, to the IR.
The Giants’ first game is 9/9 at Dallas. It’s the Sunday Night game with Madden and Michaels announcing. Sounds like fun for the first week of play.
Trotter to Giants?
NBC Sports reports unrestricted free-agent LB Jeremiah Trotter is interested in the New York Giants
Reyes SB in April, May, June compared to July, Aug.
Mets Shortstop Jose Reyes swiped his 70th stolen base of the season. That’s the most in the major leagues, and after breaking the club record for steals in a season at 67, he looks
to keep extending it. Chances are he’ll easily break it again in upcoming seasons.
Jose Reyes, 24, has had 33 stolen bases in July and August, while he had 37 steals from April to June.
That’s 37 stolen bases in 3 months, while 33 in 2 months! I think I can say at least one person who has contributed to the sudden increase in stolen bases over the past two months: Rickey Henderson. Rickey Henderson joined the Mets on July 12, following former hitting coach Rick Down’s firing. Henderson took over as first base coach, and Howard Johnson moved to hitting coach.
Reyes is also the first infielder to swipe 60 or more steals in three straight seasons since the modern stolen base rule came into effect in 1898, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Largest Lead of any Division Leader
While the Red Sox have a 6.5 game lead over the Yankees, the Mets have a 7 game lead over both Philadelphia and Atlanta.
The Mets, (73-55) have the largest lead over the second place team in the Major Leagues (7).
Kevin Kernan of the NY Post on Sun, Aug 26:
“…the NL East race is over. Though the Yankees are fighting for their playoff souls, the Mets are merrily on their way to another October.”
