Early Info on Super Bowl XLII

The Super Bowl’s “Home Team” switches from AFC to NFC in even and odd years. Wikipedia explains this year’s situation:
“In Super Bowl XLII, the NFC representative, the New York Giants, were scheduled to be the home team; after winning 10 consecutive games on the road in the 2007 season (3 coming in the playoffs) and earning themselves the nickname “The Road Warriors,” they deferred the designation to the New England Patriots.

The last time the Giants wore their home uniform in the Super Bowl (2000), they lost.

The thing that gets me confused about this is that Wikipedia explains that the NFC is the home team in the even years, but it says the Giants are scheduled to be the home team.

Notes:

•The cost for a 30-second commercial in Super Bowl XLII has been estimated at $2.7 million

•Mike Carey has been chosen to be the Head Referee

•Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will announce the game on Fox, while Pam Oliver and Chris Myers will be on the sidelines. The pre-game coverage with Kurt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw,Howie Long, and Jimmy Johnson will begin at 2pm with Road to the Super Bowl highlight on at noon.

THE GIANTS ARE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!!! THEY ARE NFC CHAMPIONS!!

The Giants are going to the Super Bowl, thanks to Lawrence Tynes’ 47-yarder to seal the deal in the 2nd ever overtime in NFC Championship history!!

The Giants, seeded number 5 in the NFC Playoffs, knocked off three division winners, two first-round-bye teams, and all while on the road in hostile crowds in Tampa, Dallas, and Green Bay, while brutal weather conditions in Green Bay also.

The Giants have advanced to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2000, when they lost to the Baltimore Ravens, a wild card team at the time.

Eli Manning continued his playoff success with another interception-less game and he hasn’t thrown a pick since week 17 of the regular season.

A lot of credit should go to Steve Spagnuolo and what he did with the Giants defense this season. He turned them around from 0-2 and trying to find out who goes where to Champions of the National Football Conference and headed to Arizona for Super Bowl XLII. How does that happen? Wow.

The running back position has stayed together this year, whether it was Jacobs’ injury earlier this year, Ward’s injury 3/4 through the season, or Bradshaw’s emergence as a rookie, this squad has gone through several ups and downs this year and they were able to fight it out and have a successful season.

I’ll have more posted soon, but for now, the GIANTS ARE NFC CHAMPIONS AND WILL HAVE A REMATCH WITH THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS IN TWO WEEKS!

Scouting this week’s opponent: The Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are a very talented football team, and they’ve come a looong way since last season when they were 8-8. Their WR corp is amazing now, and all Brett Favre has to do is take two steps back and gun it to them on a slant pass. It’s almost guaranteed they will break tackles and get plenty of yards after catch.

Ryan Grant, who the Giants let go as a nobody, was picked up by the Packers because they thought he might be of somewhat use. I guess so. Last week he ran all over the Seattle defense and he’s had some of the NFL’s most rushing yards since mid-season. This is a guy to be afraid of.

If the Giants D-Line puts pressure on Brett Favre, I expect he’ll have a hard time, and I don’t care who you are, if it is under 10 degrees, it’s not going to be an easy thing to throw the ball to a WR down the field when you’re getting hit hard.

GIANTS HEADED THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!!!!!!!!

THE NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS HAVE KNOCKED OFF THE #1 SEED DALLAS COWBOYS AND WITH ONE MORE WIN, THEY WILL BE IN THE SUPER BOWL!!!

The Giants had all sorts of momentum from both the New England game and the Tampa Bay game in their favor going into this game and they used it to their advantage. The just-woken-from-their-nap Cowboys were met head on with the Steaming-Hot G-Men and failed to even win one playoff game in their big season.

The Cowboys, whose pro bowlers outnumbered the Giants 12-1, were losing 21-17 late in the game and had stopped the Giants offense, meaning with 1 time-out left, Dallas had one more shot. The Cowboys started around midfield and got all the way down to the red zone due to penalties. The Giants, whose CB’s position were already thinned due to injury, were dropping like flies all the way down to the practice squad players! Dropped Cowboy Passes, strong pressure on Romo, and mis-communications all led to the Dallas loss.

Sam Madison will likely return to the NFC Championship game, at least I’m guessing, and Aaron Ross will hopefully be able to repair his damaged arm. The Giants defense is doing a fantastic job, and you have to give credit to the defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo. He has come from being a little-known linebackers coach to a big-time defensive coach that is already being considered for head coaching jobs (Atlanta).

Eli Manning and Amani Toomer had a great game, with Toomer catching two TD’s from Manning and Eli not even throwing a pick. He has thrown 0 INT’s during the playoffs. The Giants have been staying away from Burress because the defenses all expect Burress to be the man that gets the ball his way. The Giants used him to throw the ball elsewhere, like to Steve Smith and Amani Toomer.

Like what my brother Tim said today, great quarterbacks happen in the playoffs, not the regular season. Tony Romo has been a solid regular season quarterback, but he hasn’t gotten anything done in the playoffs. Back-to-back years he has made the final play for the Cowboys, and each season it was a turnover.

The Giants won their 9th straight game on the road, something that is unprecedented. One big thing that will help the Giants if they win next week is that they will get a bye week before the Super Bowl.

Anything can happen next week, and it will all come down to whether the Giants can stop two things: Ryan Grant, and the Green Bay slants that the WR’s do. Besides, if the Giants can beat the number 1 seed, what makes you think they can’t beat the number 2 seed? If they do, the New York Football Giants will be representing the NFC in the Super Bowl.
